When you are having a car issue, sometimes it can be difficult to know whether your car is functional and just having a bad day or if there is something seriously wrong with your car. It is important to pay attention to how your car normally functions and how it acts when there is something wrong. There are common car repairs that your car may need on occasion to keep it working properly. If you notice that something is wrong with your car or are in need of a repair, we at Paskett Auto would be more than happy to help.

Common Car Repairs

One of the most common car repair problems has to do with the brakes. The brakes of your car are used every day, and over time the different parts of the brake can begin to wear down. The pads, rotors, and drums of your brakes will need to be replaced on occasion to keep your brakes working properly. If you notice that your car is taking longer to slow down or that you have to press harder on your brakes to stop the car, then you may need to get your brakes repaired.

Replacing Batteries

One of the most common car repairs is simply replacing the car battery. As a car ages, so does the car’s battery. An old battery can become corroded which can cause problems for the car overall. A corroded or old battery can make it difficult for your car to start. If you find that your battery is corroded or are having difficulty starting your car, it would be a good idea to get the battery replaced.

Replacing Wiper Fluid And Wipers

A common car problem that people deal with is their windows becoming difficult to see through. In the winter and when there is a lot of rain or snow, it is so important to have wipers that work correctly. When you start seeing streaks on your windshield or hearing a loud noise when your wipers go over your windows, then it may be time to replace your wipers. Similarly, streaks or cloudiness on your windshield could indicate that it is time to switch out your wiper fluid.

Oil Changes

Another common reason why people take their car into the shop is because they need an oil change. By regularly switching out your oil, your car will work better for much longer. If your oil is not changed out on time, it could begin to solidify in the engine, causing your engine to get clogged up. This is bad because it could make it difficult for oil to reach parts of the engine making it difficult for your engine to work.

Switching Out Tires

Your tires receive a lot of wear and tear each day that you drive it. While it is important to know how to change a tire on your own in an emergency, getting your tires rotated and switched out at the shop ensures that you are able to use the tires for the longest time period possible. If you do not get your tires switched out often enough, you may not get to use the full life of the tire or may put yourself in a dangerous position if the tire pops.

Scheduled Maintenance

The most common reason why people get a repair is because they went in for their scheduled maintenance and it was found that something was wrong with a part of their car. This is so important because when you go in for your scheduled maintenance, it ensures that problems that could cause damage to your vehicle can be prevented and avoided.

Figuring out when you should get your tires changed out can be a difficult decision. You have to consider how long you have had the tires on the car, how often you drive the car, how often the tires have been rotated, and whether or not they are high quality tires. Maybe it has been a couple of years but they seem to be working just fine. Perhaps the tread looks like it could last for some time, but you are pretty sure your tires are past their expiration. Continue reading to learn when and  just how often you should get your tires changed out.

The risk with keeping old tires on your car is that your tread could wear down. Worn down tread means that you could be at risk of hydroplaning when it rains. This could lead to a possible accident which could put you, your family, other people, and your vehicle in danger. A worn down tire could also eventually burst which could also cause an accident and could cause you a big hassle trying to get the tire replaced wherever the tire burst. It is much better to simply get your tires changed out when they need to be replaced.

When To Get Your Tires Changed

The standard amount of time that we recommend starting to consider getting your tires changed out is four to six years after they have been put on the car. An auto shop, such as Paskett Auto, can check your tires and let you be sure when the time is right. However, it would be a good idea to start having a yearly check up for your tires around year four of having the tires on your car to ensure that your tires are faring well.

The way that you can personally check the age of your tires is to look at the wall of the tire. On the tire wall a manufacture date will be posted. If the date is more than six years old, then it is advisable to get your tires switched out.

Although it is typically recommended to get your tires changed out after six years, it may be necessary to change out your tires more frequently or earlier than six years if you drive your car more often than the average person. Typically a tire’s useful life is anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 miles driven. And that depends on the brand and quality of the tires so it is important to check with your tire’s manufacturer or an auto body shop.

There are also a couple of telltale signs that will indicate that it may be time to get your tires changed. However, it is possible that these signs will be present at the same time, so if one of the signs presents itself, the safe bet would be to get your tires checked especially if you have had the tires on your car for some time.

One of the ways that you can check to see if your tires need to be replaced is to place a penny in the outermost groove of the tire. If you cannot see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, then your tread is okay. If you can see his whole head then it is time to replace the tires.

If you notice that there is wear or damage on the sides of the tires, then that can be an indication of more serious problems with your vehicle. Wear on the side of the tire can cause your tire to blowout which we have established as a big problem. Also pay attention to if your tires have rubbed down more on one side than the other. Uneven wear on the surface of the tread can mean that the vehicle is misaligned.
