How Often You Should Get Your Tires Changed

Home|Archives forAuto Repair

Figuring out when you should get your tires changed out can be a difficult decision. You have to consider how long you have had the tires on the car, how often you drive the car, how often the tires have been rotated, and whether or not they are high quality tires. Maybe it has been a couple of years but they seem to be working just fine. Perhaps the tread looks like it could last for some time, but you are pretty sure your tires are past their expiration. Continue reading to learn when and  just how often you should get your tires changed out.

The risk with keeping old tires on your car is that your tread could wear down. Worn down tread means that you could be at risk of hydroplaning when it rains. This could lead to a possible accident which could put you, your family, other people, and your vehicle in danger. A worn down tire could also eventually burst which could also cause an accident and could cause you a big hassle trying to get the tire replaced wherever the tire burst. It is much better to simply get your tires changed out when they need to be replaced.

When To Get Your Tires Changed

The standard amount of time that we recommend starting to consider getting your tires changed out is four to six years after they have been put on the car. An auto shop, such as Paskett Auto, can check your tires and let you be sure when the time is right. However, it would be a good idea to start having a yearly check up for your tires around year four of having the tires on your car to ensure that your tires are faring well.

The way that you can personally check the age of your tires is to look at the wall of the tire. On the tire wall a manufacture date will be posted. If the date is more than six years old, then it is advisable to get your tires switched out.

Although it is typically recommended to get your tires changed out after six years, it may be necessary to change out your tires more frequently or earlier than six years if you drive your car more often than the average person. Typically a tire’s useful life is anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 miles driven. And that depends on the brand and quality of the tires so it is important to check with your tire’s manufacturer or an auto body shop.

There are also a couple of telltale signs that will indicate that it may be time to get your tires changed. However, it is possible that these signs will be present at the same time, so if one of the signs presents itself, the safe bet would be to get your tires checked especially if you have had the tires on your car for some time.

One of the ways that you can check to see if your tires need to be replaced is to place a penny in the outermost groove of the tire. If you cannot see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, then your tread is okay. If you can see his whole head then it is time to replace the tires.

If you notice that there is wear or damage on the sides of the tires, then that can be an indication of more serious problems with your vehicle. Wear on the side of the tire can cause your tire to blowout which we have established as a big problem. Also pay attention to if your tires have rubbed down more on one side than the other. Uneven wear on the surface of the tread can mean that the vehicle is misaligned.

Different Types of Car Noises

There are many different types of car noises that can be concerning. If you can learn to identify the sounds, or simply recognize which sounds could possibly be worrisome, it will help you avoid further damage to your vehicle or getting into possible situations where you, your passengers, or other cars could be put in danger. Following are several car noises to look out for.

car noises

Humming or Droning Sound

The first car noise you should be on the lookout for is a humming or droning sound when you are accelerating. This sound could be the result of an issue with your tires. Your tires could be leaking air or wearing out. If this is the case, your tires will likely need to be replaced. Your car differential could also be in need of lubrication or your transmission could be failing. With any of these issues, you will need to visit an automotive repair shop.

Squeaking Sounds

Squeaking sounds when you are turning the wheel of your vehicle are likely due to a problem with your power steering system. Many times the squeaking sound will be accompanied by a difficulty turning the wheel. If it is the case that the sound is coming from turning the wheel, then the problem is most likely being caused by the power steering fluid being low or the pump could be failing.

If the sound is not coming when you are turning the wheel and seems to be emulating from underneath your hood, then the sound could be caused by a worn or damaged belt. If you are hearing a squeaking sound, be sure to take your car into the shop to ensure that long-term damage can be avoided.

Rumbling Sounds

If your car is producing a rumbling sound there are a variety of potential reasons why it is happening. One potential problem that could be the cause of rumbling sounds in your car is dirty fuel injectors. For your engine to work properly, it needs fuel and air. Dirty fuel injectors can inhibit the fuel from getting to the engine. Your air filter may also be dirty, which would inhibit air from getting to the engine.

Another possible problem could be that the spark plugs that are used to ignite the fuel could be faulty or old. If that is the case, then it is important to get them replaced. If you have a dirty air filter or fuel injector, your mechanic may be able to clean them or may recommend that you get them replaced.

Roaring Sound

A roaring sound could be the result of your exhaust system failing. If your muffler is not working properly, then it is possible that the engine’s sounds could be conducted into the car, resulting in a loud roar. If the roaring sound is coming when you are accelerating, then it is likely that there is a crack in your exhaust system. A problem with a crack in your exhaust system is that it could also allow carbon monoxide into the interior of your car.

Different Car Noises

There are many different car noises that you could potentially hear that could be concerning. Some are more obvious than others, but it is important to understand what certain noises could mean in order to protect yourself and your vehicle. If you become aware of a noise and are concerned that it could be a serious issue, do not hesitate to reach out to us at Paskett Auto. We would be happy to identify the noise and fix any problem that the sound is associated with.

Knocking

If you are hearing a knocking sound in your car it could be due to putting the wrong grade of gasoline in your car. A low-grade gasoline could cause the engine pistons to move irregularly causing a knocking sound. The sound could also be due to fuel burning erratically within your car’s engine cylinders or malfunctioning spark plugs. This can be fixed by using the right gasoline for your vehicle and getting regular tune-ups to ensure your spark plugs and cylinders are functioning properly.

Grinding And/Or Screeching

Grinding or screeching in your car, especially when you are trying to slow down, typically means that something is wrong with your brakes or brake pads. Some brake pads will screech when they are getting too low. If you are noticing screeching accompanied by grinding, low brake pads is probably your issue. You may also be having a problem with your wheel. A failing wheel which screeches is difficult to turn and could cause your car to drift to one side.

Rattling

If you notice a constant rattling noise from beneath your car when you are driving, it could mean that something is loose. It might be hard to notice but a loose muffler or other metal piece can be refastened with a screwdriver or may need to be replaced. A catalytic converter that is failing may also be to blame for a rattling sound. You may need to get your catalytic converter replaced if it is breaking down.

Whining

Whining or squealing could be attributed to many different issues with your car. If you notice the sound when you start your car it could be due to a worn out belt. If your belt is worn out it will need to be replaced. The whining sound could also be attributed to any other part of your engine malfunctioning, so if you hear whining it is not a good sign. If you hear whining, the best course of action would be to go to your local mechanic shop and get it looked at.
